What is Kirtan?

Kirtan is a practice of Bhakti yoga – the path of devotion.  Kirtan is the traditional practice of chanting, call & response, the divine names along with devotional music.  Most chants are sung in sanskrit – the sacred, vibrational language used in yogic and vedic practices.  Each kirtan (or song) has its own melody and feeling – sometimes quiet and sweet, other times upbeat and fun. Regular practice of kirtan opens the heart, cultivates love & compassion, affects the subtle energy body, and raises consciousness – it is a beautiful, peaceful and energizing practice. Kirtan is practiced in a group – everyone’s energy and participation contributes to the practice. Anyone can practice kirtan – all faiths, experiences, & ages (most kids and babies really love kirtan too!). Bhakti yoga celebrates devotion to the divine in all of its forms or names, so it does not conflict with any other religion or belief.

About the Solar Dynasty Band

The Solar Dynasty Band offers a traditional style kirtan that is deeply meditative and devotional. Infused with love & devotion, sanskrit mantra, traditional Indian classical music & rhythms, and personal expression – their kirtan creates an uplifting, healing and sacred space to celebrate and honor the divine presence in us all. Ravi and Lisa view it as their dharma or sacred path to bring the powerful practices of mantra and kirtan to others. Whether playing solo, as a duo or accompanied by other talented musicians, their goal is to uplift and bring people to deeper states of bliss and meditation. Their kirtan is influenced by Ma Chetan Jyoti, Sadguru Sant Keshavadas, Namadeva Acharya, Devadas, Krishna Das and the divine shakti that flows through us all.

About Satya-Franche

Satya Franche began her singing career as a child in Montreal.  She holds two degrees in music and has worked extensively both in live performance and in the studio.  In the 80’s, she recorded a pop album entitled “As We Were” with her group, So Sudden.  Her kirtan journey began in 2006, when she formed Ma Kirtan, inspired by the divine feminine and guided by the divine play of her guru, Sri Neem Karoli Maharaj.  Satya-Franchedraws her no-holds-barred style of leading from the influences of the Western kirtan wallahs as well as her experiences of kirtan in India.  She incorporates her vocal skills with a sense of enthusiasm, and clear love for the practice, that today makes her a popular chant leader.  Satya has recorded and performed with many of today’s kirtan leaders including, Krishna Das,  Shyamdas,  David Newman and Mira, and Sruti Ram and Ishwari, and toured in India, Canada and the Northeastern States with the late Ma Chetan Jyoti, one of kirtan’s great voices.
